Instead of a quote tonight… I bear a super easy recipe for my sister to use with her son. Traditional challah with a treat. Makes two medium sized loaves.

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 1/2 tspn salt
  • 1 oz active dry yeast
  • 3 eggs
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips, at least 1/2 cup

  1. Dissolve yeast into warm water.
  2. Sift remaining dry ingredients.
  3. Mix yeast-water with dry ingredients and 1/4 cup oil.
  4. Mix in 2 eggs and honey, until doughey.
  5. Use a bread hook to knead (if you have a Kitchen Aid) for 5 mins. Then knead dough by hand for 1 min. (Knead by hand, otherwise).
  6. Grease a large bowl and roll dough in it.
  7. Let the dough rise (in the bowl) for at least an hour (cover with a towel).
  8. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  9. Divide the dough in half.
  10. Divide a halve into thirds, rolling the thirds into long rolls.
  11. Flatten the rolls into strips by hand.
  12. Drop a line of chocolate chips down the center of each strip, then roll up the sides making each piece into a roll again.
  13. Braid 3 together (repeat steps 10 – 13 for second loaf).
  14. Beat one egg and brush over the tops of the loaves.
  15. Bake the loaves for 30 – 45 mins (until golden brown and glossy)
  16. Eat!

And the finished challot!

Aaand, today was a long day. I got a little done. I’ll go in depth tomorrow. Loodles.
